Who is Zaraki Kenpachi:

Zaraki Kenpachi is a character in the Bleach Series and one of the strongest in that verse. Zaraki Kenpachi is a Shinigami (Soul Reaper) and the Captain of 11th Division in the Gotei 13.

The Gotei 13 (13 Court Guard Squads) is the primary military branch of the Soul Society. Every Division in the Gotei 13 specializes in different functions. Some specialize in assassinations, some in healing, some in Research and Development, and Zaraki’s division is the absolute vanguard of physical offense, specializing strictly in swordsmanship and raw power. By this, you can understand that their Captain Zaraki is a man who excels in Direct Combat and Swordsmanship as well as Raw power. The Kenpachi in his name is not a surname but a title.

This title belongs to the strongest Swordsman in a generation and there were a total of 10 Kenpachi and Zaraki is the Kenpachi of the current Generation. Today we will tell you about his Bankai which will make its debut in the next episode of Bleach Thousand Year Blood War cour 4. But before that we will tell you the Basics of his power and his Origin as one of the most powerful characters in bleach.

Before beginning the rest of the article, let us understand the basics of the power system in the Bleach story which will make it much easier for us to explain and for you to understand  Zaraki’s power.

Bleach builds its power system around spiritual energy, and once you understand that core idea, everything else clicks into place.

Reiryoku and Reiatsu (Spiritual Energy and Pressure)

In Bleach, every soul has spiritual energy stored inside it called reiryoku. When that energy is released and felt outside the body, it's called reiatsu, or spiritual pressure. A simple way to think about it: reiryoku is the fuel, and reiatsu is what you feel when that fuel is burned. The stronger a character is, the heavier their reiatsu feels to those around them, weaker fighters can even be knocked down or paralyzed just by standing near someone powerful. Because of this, strong characters often learn to hide or hold back their pressure so they don't overwhelm allies or give away their strength to enemies.

Zanpakuto: The Soul Reaper's Blade

Every Soul Reaper wields a zanpakuto, a sword that's actually a living extension of their own soul. It's not just a weapon; it has a name, a personality, and a spirit form that the wielder must connect with to unlock its true power. This relationship is central to the whole system — a Soul Reaper who doesn't understand or respect their zanpakuto's spirit will never reach their full potential.

Shikai: The First Release

Shikai is the zanpakuto's initial released state. To trigger it, the wielder speaks a personal release command paired with the sword's true name, and the blade transforms into a unique weapon or gains a special ability tied to the wielder's own character and fighting style. No two shikai are alike — some grant elemental control, others alter the battlefield itself, and some come with abilities so strange they take fans by surprise. Reaching shikai typically requires the wielder to learn their zanpakuto's name through introspection and training.

Bankai: The Final Release

Bankai is the second and far more powerful release, representing the pinnacle of a Soul Reaper's bond with their zanpakuto. It amplifies the shikai's abilities dramatically, sometimes reshaping them entirely, and demands a massive surge of spiritual energy to maintain. Traditionally, bankai takes years or even decades of training to achieve, making it a mark of elite strength. Only a small fraction of Soul Reapers ever reach this level, which is part of why the series treats it as such a dramatic turning point whenever a character unlocks it.

The elegance of the system is how it layers personal identity onto raw power. Spiritual pressure sets the baseline of who's strong, but shikai and bankai are what turn that raw strength into something distinct and character-driven; every release says something about the person wielding it.

Zaraki Kenpachi’s Past:

Zaraki killed the previous captain of the 11th division who was the 10th Kenpachi, and then Zaraki took the Title of Kenpachi for himself. Kenpachi's origin isn't tragic in the way Ichigo's is, or noble in the way Kuchiki's is. It's just brutal. He grew up nameless in the worst part of Rukongai District 80, the lawless slum zone where the law barely exists and survival is the only skill that matters. No family. No home. No name, even, until he took the name "Zaraki" from the district itself.

He took a sword of a dead Shinigami and then the Sword's soul was overridden by his own soul, and the Sword became an extension of his own Soul. In other words he took someone else’s Zanpakuto and made it his own. Zaraki as a child was still one of the strongest souls in the Soul Society. He killed so many people that there were mountains of dead bodies in District 80. When Zaraki was young Unohana once visited District 80 and there she fought Zaraki. Unohana was the First Kenpachi and was known as a ruthless Killer and was a member of the first-ever Gotei 13. She was truly strong but a young Zaraki was still stronger than her. While fighting Unohana Zaraki felt an impulse of Excitement for the first time in his whole life. Zaraki never ever enjoyed a battle as he was so strong that he never had to strike twice to kill anyone in his fight. But Unohana was also known as one of the strongest and also the very first Kenpachi and she had the power to fight on par with Zaraki.

While fighting Unohana, he still was able to overpower her but he didn’t want his fun to go away so he subconsciously suppressed his own power. Seeing this Unohana was deeply hurt and blamed her own weakness for that. Zaraki lost the battle but Unohana knew that he is the true Kenpachi and due to her weakness being the reason Zaraki suppressed his own power, Unohana was very disgusted with herself. This was the power of Zaraki and despite being so strong even at that time he never mastered his full strength. He was never able to learn the true name of his Zanpakuto which helps in unlocking a Shinigami’s true potential, because he was suppressing his own powers his connection to his Zanpakuto was disturbed and he was not able to learn his Zanpakuto’s name until very later.

In the TYBW arc when Soul society was destroyed by the enemies and Zaraki was defeated by the Enemy leader, Unohana knew that it was time to help Zaraki unlock his full strength. Unohana took Zaraki to an underground prison and they both started a duel in the pretext of training. Unohana knew that facing death would be the true trigger to unlock Zaraki’s potential (Megumi reference) and then they fought a fierce battle where Unohana lost her life and Zaraki’s true strength was unlocked. After this fierce battle Zaraki unlocked his true power and learned the name of his Zanpakuto which was Nozarashi.

Zaraki Shikai and Yachiru Connection:

As we know that Zaraki has now unlocked his Shikai after cutting down Unohana, and now he can fully master his strength with full coordination of his Zanpakuto. Once he cuts her down and finally hears his Zanpakutō speak, Shikai activates. In its released state, Nozarashi becomes something closer to an axe than a katana, and the power jump is immediate and enormous. In its released state, Nozarashi possesses tremendous additional attack power, casually strong enough to destroy a huge meteorite in a single attack. He can literally cut through space with his unlocked powers.

Now many fans are confused about who Yachiru is, Yachiru is a soul resembling a small girl Zaraki found in District 80. She was a fearless toddler who was not afraid of the bloodshed Zaraki had done and despite Zaraki’s overwhelming power, she went near him and laughed. Zaraki was so impressed by her fearlessness that he immediately adopted her and gave her the name Yachiru which was after the name of the one person he respected, and that person was Yachiru Unohana.

Yachiru and Zaraki’s relationship is like a father-and-daughter relationship, and she is also the lieutenant of the 11th division. She always stays with Kenpachi and he spoils her rotten. But the twist in the story is that Yachiru is none other than Nozarashi itself. When Zaraki suppressed his own powers his connection with Nozarashi was also weakened, due to which Nozarashi had to manifest herself in the form of a child to stay with Zaraki and protect him. When he unleashes his Shikai, Yachiru disappears and deep in his heart, Zaraki understands that she returned to her original world.

BANKAI: THE BERSERKER NOBODY SAW COMING:

Now the explanation for which all of you were waiting for is here. Zaraki’s Bankai is one of the most awaited Bankai’s in the Bleach series and is one of the strongest Bankai in the Soul Society. During the fight against Gerard Valkyrie, a Sternritter who had already shrugged off attacks from Byakuya and Hitsugaya working together, Kenpachi collapses after getting overwhelmed. Then Yachiru appears in front of him. Except it's not Yachiru. It's Nozarashi, who was with Zaraki this entire time as Yachiru, telling him that if he uses her correctly, he can beat anyone. She touches his hand, reiatsu starts pouring out, and she tells him this power everyone calls Bankai is finally his to use.

Once Bankai activates, the transformation is immediate and violent. Kenpachi's skin turns red, black markings spread across his body, and horns grow from his head, giving him an oni-like appearance. Oddly, his weapon actually shrinks down from the massive blade of his Shikai into a smaller, short cleaver — but it loses none of its destructive edge infact his strength and cutting power spike so dramatically that he's able to cut through a towering, monstrous Gerard in a single strike, tearing his arm off and slicing him apart from a distance. The cost is steep, though. The power surge is so extreme that Kenpachi's own body struggles to contain it, and he loses Yachiru as a companion in the process, even if her spirit lives on inside the blade. It's a fitting payoff for a character whose entire arc is about learning that raw strength alone

So this was all about Kenpachi Zaraki and the origin of his Bankai.
