Who Is Shamrock Figarland? Shanks' Twin, Powers & Origin Explained

Learn who Shamrock Figarland is in One Piece, his connection to Shanks, his powers, origin story, and role in Elbaph.

Who Is Shamrock Figarland?

In Chapter 1137 of the One Piece manga, Shamrock Figarland is introduced as the commander of the Knights of God, which definitely means he's a big shot. But fans went crazy because this person is the twin brother of the red-haired pirate Shanks, and they share the same father (Saint Figarland Garling, one of the Five Elders) and red hair. This confirms a fan-predicted “twin theory” about Shanks’s origins.

In appearance, Shamrock is a tall, lean man with long red braided hair like Shanks, but with distinct aristocratic attire and no scar over his eye. He wears a black-and-gold military tailcoat, white pants, carries a golden saber on his left hip, and often wears a blue cloak. As a World Noble (Celestial Dragon) and Knights of God commander, he exudes authority. Unlike Shanks, he has two functional arms (Shanks has only one) and commands the loyalty of the other nobles' personal army.

Shamrock’s Origin & Family Background

Shamrock and Shanks were born in God Valley, the island whose existence was erased by the World Government because it was a non-World Government island where the Celestial Dragons held a brutal event every three years. They would choose a non-World Government island, bring slaves there, and hunt the island's population for sport while earning points for kills. God Valley was selected as one of these hunting grounds.

Shamrock's and Shanks's father is World Noble Saint Figarland Garling, and their mother was a resident of God Valley named Magnolia. Garling met Magnolia during a God Valley expedition, after which he left, only returning 11 years later for the brutal tournament that was being held at God Valley. At that time, Shamrock and Shanks were about one year old.

Garling had another motive for returning to God Valley: to reclaim his children. He murdered Magnolia as he wanted to marry Shakky (Shakuyaku).

Shakuyaku was considered one of the most beautiful women of that era and was kidnapped by the World Government. They made her the first prize of the Native Hunting Competition.

Some Marines, along with World Government officials, Celestial Dragons, and Holy Knights, were present for the tournament. Miraculously, Monkey D. Dragon was one of the rookie Marines. He was flabbergasted by the events, patrolling the island while witnessing the horror and trying to process the situation. During one of his patrols, he found the dying Magnolia and both twins.

Due to his sense of justice and Magnolia’s dying request, he rescued the twins, and Dragon fled the island carrying both infants. However, as he escaped, Dragon was intercepted by Maffei of the Satchels Family. Maffei kidnapped Shamrock, delivering him to Mary Geoise, while Dragon hid Shanks in a treasure chest and escaped with him.

Thus, from infancy, the twins were separated: Shamrock grew up among the Celestial Dragons in Mary Geoise, while Shanks grew up on the sea with the Roger Pirates.

Over time, Shamrock became fully integrated into the World Noble world. He rose through the ranks to become the Knight Commander (団長 “Dancho”) of the Knights of God, the private military order serving the Celestial Dragons. He is second in command only to his father, Garling, who holds the title of Supreme Commander (最高司令官). In short, Shamrock occupies a very high position in the World Government hierarchy, commanding respect and resources far beyond those of typical pirates or nobles.

Spoiler (Past): Manga Volume 112 (Chapter 1086) contains hints about Shamrock’s birth. In one scene, Garling shouts, “Watch me, my children,” during the God Valley Incident, implying that he was referring to both Shanks and Shamrock. This cryptic line foreshadowed the twins’ existence long before they were named.

Shamrock’s Appearance in Elbaph Arc

Shamrock’s first clear appearance for us readers is in the Elbaph Arc, and to be precise, in One Piece manga Chapter 1137. He arrives on Elbaph alongside fellow Knight of God Saint Manmayer Gunko to forcefully recruit the accursed prince of Elbaph, Loki, to the World Government.

However, Loki refuses their offer, and Shamrock and Gunko then make one final proposal: they will install giants as rulers of the New World (having supposedly done so long ago in legend) and demand that either Loki join them or be killed in his chains.

Of course, we know Loki, and he refuses. The situation quickly turns hostile. Gunko tortures Loki’s pet to force him to cooperate, angering Loki. But after noticing Shamrock’s striking resemblance to Shanks, Loki questions him about it. Shamrock reveals the truth without much concern and says that he and Shanks are twin brothers. This revelation shocks Loki, while for us readers, some were shocked and others felt proud for believing the long-standing Shanks twin theory.

At that time, Loki was still chained, so Shamrock tells him that if he survives this fatal blow, then they will fight properly. He unsheathes his Cerberus sword, which has eaten a Devil Fruit, and summons its power. Cerberus is a bizarre three-headed sword-beast (an awakened Mythical Zoan) that Shamrock commands to attack Loki. The chapter ends on a cliffhanger, with Loki badly wounded by Cerberus and Shamrock preparing to abduct Elbaph’s royal children as hostages to force the kingdom’s surrender.

Notably, during this encounter, Shamrock displays an incredible burst of Haki. An enormous aura of black lightning radiates from him upon arriving. This confirms that he possesses at least Armament and/or Conqueror’s Haki (likely at advanced levels). He is powerful enough to intimidate Scopper Gaban with just his presence, and honestly, it would be surprising if the commander of the Holy Knights was not a Conqueror’s Haki user.

Shamrock’s Powers, Haki & Devil Fruit

Shamrock is exceptionally powerful, combining lineage, Haki, and a cursed weapon. Following are his known abilities:

  • Awakened Mythical Zoan – Cerberus Sword: Shamrock’s signature weapon is a saber that contains the power of the Awakened Zoan-type Cerberus Devil Fruit. The blade can physically transform into a three-headed dog with blades for mouths. When Shamrock summons “Cerberus,” it springs to life and obeys his commands, as seen when it attacks Loki. Even the strong giant Loki was terrified of being impaled by its triple blades. (Cerberus is not a Devil Fruit that Shamrock ate; rather, his sword itself is the Devil Fruit user, which is quite an unusual trait in the world of One Piece.)
  • Advanced Haki: As Garling’s son and a supreme commander, Shamrock has mastered all three types of Haki. His introduction on Elbaph is accompanied by an enormous Conqueror’s Haki eruption, with the manga depicting it as a storm of black lightning. This overwhelming aura was sensed even by legendary figures like Scopper Gaban. He undoubtedly also possesses strong Busoshoku Haki (Armament) to wield the Awakened Cerberus and intimidate giant opponents. Shanks himself is a Haki prodigy, and since Garling mentioned years ago that Shanks could reach Shamrock’s level after a Covenant, many fans infer that Shamrock’s Haki potential may be even greater than Shanks’s.
  • World Noble Covenant: Upon joining the Knights of God, Shamrock received a Divine Covenant from Imu (likely the Depths or Abyssal Covenant) — the same rare supernatural pact granted to other top Celestial Dragons. This covenant has reportedly given him immortality and regeneration, similar to the Five Elders, along with other mystical powers. In short, he may be effectively immortal and capable of surviving fatal injuries.
  • Physical & Tactical Skills: Shamrock is a skilled swordsman and commander. He combines agility, being quick enough to summon Cerberus mid-fight, with ruthless efficiency. Even the giants respect his physical prowess. He also demonstrates cunning, as using the kidnapping of children as a strategic “game” suggests a cruel but calculating tactical mind.

Summary: Shamrock is, by all accounts, one of the strongest humans introduced so far. His blend of Celestial Dragon nobility, Haki, and the Cerberus weapon puts him firmly in the Emperor-class bracket. Fans even speculate that he may rival Luffy and Blackbeard, given his unique advantages such as Covenant immortality and his position within the World Government.

Shamrock: The Man Shanks Could Have Become

The most fascinating thing about Shamrock is not his power, his position among the Holy Knights, or even the revelation that he is Shanks's twin brother. What makes him compelling is that he represents the life Shanks rejected.

Born into the same bloodline, the two brothers chose completely different paths. Shanks abandoned the privilege of the Celestial Dragons and found freedom among pirates. Shamrock, on the other hand, embraced the ideology of Mary Geoise and became one of its most loyal enforcers.

Unlike the easygoing and charismatic Shanks, Shamrock embodies the arrogance and cruelty often associated with the World Nobles. He genuinely believes that those of noble blood stand above ordinary people. To him, commoners exist beneath the Celestial Dragons, and compassion is a weakness rather than a virtue. While he presents himself as calm and composed, that politeness quickly disappears when someone challenges his authority.

The Elbaph arc highlights this darker side of his character. Shamrock initially attempts negotiation, showing that he is neither reckless nor impulsive. However, the moment diplomacy fails, he resorts to overwhelming force without hesitation. His willingness to turn conquest and suffering into a game reveals a level of cruelty that goes beyond simple obedience to the World Government. He does not merely enforce its rule—he believes in it.

This ideological divide is what makes his relationship with Shanks so important. Although the brothers share the same face and lineage, they have become complete opposites in every meaningful way. Where Shanks values freedom, Shamrock values control. Where Shanks forms bonds across social boundaries, Shamrock sees hierarchy as natural and necessary. To Shamrock, his younger twin's decision to live among pirates is not admirable—it is disgraceful.

Their reunion therefore carries far greater significance than a typical family reveal. Shamrock is not simply a long-lost brother. He is a reflection of what Shanks might have become had he remained in Mary Geoise and accepted the values of the Celestial Dragons.

This is why the reveal resonates so strongly with readers. The story is no longer presenting a conflict between two powerful men. It is presenting a clash between two worldviews. One brother chose freedom, while the other chose authority. One rejected the system, while the other became its champion.

As One Piece enters its final saga, that contrast may prove even more important than the question fans continue to debate: which brother is stronger.

Fan Theories & Foreshadowing

Shamrock’s reveal was heavily foreshadowed by Oda, which naturally spawned numerous fan theories. Here are some of the biggest clues:

  • Vegapunk Broadcast Silhouette: In Chapter 1132, a silhouette of a cloaked figure appeared at the end of Vegapunk’s global message. Many fans speculated that this figure was not Shanks (who didn’t appear in person) but someone who looked like him — and it turned out to be Shamrock. Library of Ohara, an analysis blog, points out that this reveal helped clear Shanks of rumors surrounding Vegapunk’s message by substituting Shamrock’s likeness instead.
  • Film RED (Shanks's Bloodline Reveal): In One Piece Film Red, the Figarland name is mentioned in connection with Shanks, hinting at his noble lineage. At the time, the moment felt mysterious and raised many questions among fans. Looking back now, it seems like a deliberate clue that Shanks had ties to the Figarland family, long before Shamrock was officially introduced.
  • Reverie 2019 Panel: At the 2019 Reverie event, Oda drew Shanks giving a speech from behind a podium but only showed part of his face. After Shamrock’s introduction, some fans revisited this panel and wondered whether Oda was subtly hiding the existence of a twin. While nothing has been confirmed, it is one of those details that became much more interesting in hindsight.
  • Rocks D. Theories: Another theory emerged regarding Shamrock’s lineage. Some fans wondered whether he could somehow be connected to Davy Jones due to his birthplace God Valley . Current canon suggests otherwise, as his parentage appears to be clearly established. Even so, some fans continue to speculate about possible hidden connections to the mysterious D. bloodline beacuse rocks d xebec hometown is god valley

The reveal in Chapter 1137 shows that Oda had likely been planting clues for a long time. Whether it was intentional misdirection, hidden details in earlier chapters, or subtle references to the Figarland family, many of these theories suddenly make much more sense in retrospect. Fans should definitely keep an eye on future small details, as Oda is known for turning minor hints into major reveals years later.

Shamrock’s Role in Upcoming Battles

Shamrock’s current mission is to bring Elbaph under World Government control. He claims that “long ago, the giants gained complete control of the New World,” and now the Government seeks that power for itself. When Loki refuses to join, Shamrock opts for subjugation by force and orders the capture of Elbaph’s royal children as hostages.

Potential conflicts:

  • Shamrock vs Elbaph Warriors: The immediate battle will involve the Straw Hats, King Loki, the giant warriors, and allied pirates defending Elbaph’s freedom. Shamrock’s attack, alongside Gunko and later reinforcements such as Killingham and Sommers, presents a major threat that Luffy and his allies will eventually have to confront.
  • Shamrock vs Shanks: Many fans anticipate an eventual confrontation between Shamrock and Shanks, especially after the revelation that they are twin brothers. It may not happen immediately, as Shanks is currently pursuing his own objectives, but the buildup feels inevitable. This potential “brother duel” would test not only raw strength but also their completely opposing beliefs.
  • Shamrock vs Luffy (or others): It’s also possible that Luffy will clash with Shamrock if he remains involved in the Elbaph Arc. Considering Luffy’s alliance with Loki and his hatred of anyone who harms or kidnaps children, conflict seems almost unavoidable. If the World Government sends additional forces, other Straw Hats such as Zoro or Sanji could also find themselves facing Shamrock.
  • Shamrock in the Final War: Ultimately, Shamrock’s goals align with the World Government’s final stand against the Worst Generation and the forces opposing its rule. He could play a major role in the Final War, perhaps fighting alongside Garling and the highest-ranking World Government forces. His alleged immortality covenant alone would make him a valuable asset on the battlefield. Naturally, fan theories go even further, with some speculating that he could be connected to Ancient Weapons or other hidden mysteries, although there is currently no evidence to support those ideas.

At present, we only know Shamrock’s immediate objective: conquer Elbaph and strengthen the World Government’s position in the New World. However, the story may eventually test whether ideals such as freedom, inherited by Shanks and embraced by Luffy, can have any impact on a man who has spent his entire life serving the Celestial Dragons.
